SpiceJet has posted an unexpected quarterly profit after five consecutive quarters of losses which has boosted its share price by as much as 25%.
SpiceJet posted a profit of 561.5 million rupees ($10.15 million) for the quarter ended in June, compared with a loss of 719.6 million rupees a year earlier. Revenue rose by 51% to 14.07 billion rupees.
The airline carried 26% more passengers than the same quarter last year, while average revenue per passenger rose by 24%.
