Spanish state-owned airport operator Aena said 2022 passenger numbers reached almost 90% of the pre-Covid level, with December traffic topping 98% of what was recorded in the same month in 2019.
"The airports in the Aena network closed 2022 with a total of 243,681,775 passengers, representing an 88.5% recovery in passenger traffic compared to 2019, the last year before the impact of the pandemic. For the month of December, the recovery was close to 100%, standing at 98.1% compared to the same month in 2019, with a total of 17,897,162 passengers," Aena, which runs 46 airports in Spain and 24 in other countries, announced on January 10.
The busiest airport in 2022 was Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas with around 50 million passengers and around 500,000 tonnes of cargo, half the total by weight that passed through the Aena network.
