Southwest Airlines has promoted Lauren Woods from vice president of technology to senior vice president and chief information officer.
Cornell University graduate Woods has been with the carrier for 13 years and "has led key initiatives" across its technology department, including establishing cloud infrastructure and creating a new development and delivery platform for complex application ecosystems. Her new role will see her "play an important role in managing the airline’s technology investments, upgrades and system maintenance totalling approximately $1.3 billion in 2023", Southwest said,
Woods replaces Kathleen Merrill who in 2022 moved to an executive advisory role.
“I first want to thank Kathleen for her many and immeasurable contributions to Southwest Airlines for nearly 19 years, overseeing some of the industry’s largest and most historic technology projects," said president and chief executive Bob Jordan.
Woods' new responsibilities will see her report to chief administration and communications officer Linda Rutherford.
“Lauren’s vast experience has prepared her well for this important role, as she’s built a stellar reputation for being an innovative and transformational leader in our technology department and throughout the company," Jordan added.
In a separate announcement, the carrier said it had named former JCPenney chief executive Jill Soltau to its board, with the appointment to take effect in mid-February.
“Jill is a transformational and innovative leader with vast experience and a proven track record of success throughout her career,” said Gary Kelly, the board's executive chairman.
