Southwest (including AirTran) earned $161 million in the quarter, up 43 percent from the second quarter of 2010. Revenue was also up by 30% to $4.1 billion. Second-quarter income was $121 million, or 15 cents per share. Fuel costs rose 38% and the airline on a whole incurred $58 million in costs during the quarter associated with its acquisition of AirTran.
The airline plans to expand its network by 4 to 5% this year, but could cut capacity next year.
