South Korean airlines required to report annual C02 emissions from later this year

South Korean airlines will be required to report their annual carbon emissions to the government from later this year, following legislation passed last week, reports Korean outlet Yonhap News Agency. The International Aviation Emission Bill, passed in the National Assembly, will aim to align the country’s decarbonisation efforts with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)’s Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), said the Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. The Korea Times quoted a ministry official as saying: “The domestic emission law is aimed at imposing sanctions, including fines, on carriers which fail to maintain their C02 emissions at 2019 levels”. The emission law is expected to commence in August following Cabinet approval, and will affect eight carriers (Korean Air, Asiana Airlines, Jeju Air, Air Busan, Jin Air, T’way Air, Air Incheon and Air Seoul), concluded the Korea Times.
