Kristijonas Kaikaris, chief executive officer of Small Planet Airlines has confirmed that the Lithuania-based carrier is seeking an air operator’s certificate (AOC) in Cambodia. The airline already has AOCs in Lithuania, Poland and Germany.
Speaking at a recent conference in London, Kaikaris explained that the airline, which primarily operates on a charter basis for holiday companies, needed to balance its seasonal destination: “In Europe, the big season is May to October. In winter there are some places [we serve] such as the Canaries or ski destinations, but around half of our fleet goes off to do something else.”
By establishing a base in Cambodia, Small Planet Airlines could launch services into China. The airline has also begun to sell seats directly to passengers in Poland, which is hopes to expand, potentially into the scheduled airline space.
