Shannon Airport is gearing up for "a bustling May bank holiday" with over 45,000 people  expected to travel through the south-west Ireland hub.

The projected influx would be a 42% increase on 2022 and could top the pre-pandemic 2019 May bank holiday, the airport announced

Passengers should not expect delays, however, according to director Niall Kearns, who said "even with the influx of people using the airport over the coming days, outbound passengers are getting from the car park and through security to their gate, in an average of 15 minutes".

“We would like to remind people travelling from Shannon, that with our new hi-tech security screening in place, there is no need to separate liquids and electronics from cabin bags as our screening system allows for these items to be screened in your luggage,” said Kearns.

The weekend extends into Monday, May 1, which is a public holiday in many countries, including Ireland's nearest neighbour, the UK.

Shannon Airport earlier reported a 76% year-on-year turnover increase in 2022 to €60.7 million, as passenger numbers jumped 300% on 2021.
