Schiphol announces imminent re-opening of revamped runway

Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam has announced its Zwanenburgbaan Runway is available from May 4 after what it said was " a period of major maintenance".

However, the runway can only be "fully deployed" when visibility is good, with landings from the south are off-limits until late June, after a series of May test flights and a 30-day "validation period".

The work "included renewing the asphalt on the runway – an area equal to 86 football pitches. 60% of the asphalt was reused during this upgrade", the airport announced, adding that it refreshed 12,000 square metres of markings  and replaced six kilometres of guttering and drains.

"The runway lighting and corresponding electric cables were replaced by a more sustainable and more reliable LED lighting system. The works were carried out in collaboration with construction company Heijmans," the airport management body said.
