Ryanair again asks Brussels to intervene ahead of strike by French air traffic controllers

Ryanair is demanding the European Commission "step up and take immediate action" ahead of a fifth strike day in 2023 by France's air traffic controllers.

The Dublin-based budget carrier said the commission's president, Ursula von der Leyen, needs to act "by protecting overflights which will prevent thousands of European passengers from being disrupted" during an "unnecessary" strike starting at 6pm on February 15.

The airline accused the EU of "abandoning hundreds of thousands of passengers" and slammed the striking ATC workers who it said had "hijacked" French airspace "time after time".

Von der Leyen should quit if she cannot protect overflights, the airline said.

France has seen weeks of strikes in 2023, including several days affecting airports such as Paris-Orly as well as connecting railway lines, with workers irate over the Macron government's pension and retirement age reform plans.

British Airways and easyJet have said they will likely have to cancel some flights, with France's aviation regulator calling on carriers to reduce traffic due to the strike.
