A major runway renovation has commenced at Ostend-Bruges airport, necessitating the temporary closure of the facility while work on the Flemish Airport Development Company (LOM)- commissioned upgrade is carried out.

“We are repairing damage that has occurred in recent years due to wear and addressing local subsidence,” explained Bruno de Saegher, chairman of LOM Flanders. The company confirmed that the airport would not be increasing its capacity as a work of the work being undertaken.

Ostend-Bruges airport features one 3,200m long paved runway, which will undergo ‘thorough renovations’ in the coming weeks. Some of the airport’s multiple taxiways will also be widened, enabling 747-400 and 777-300ER aircraft to turn with a larger radius, ‘requiring less engine power and consequently reducing noise and emissions’. Sustainable LED lighting will be installed, and sewage and draining systems will also be upgraded.

CEO of Ostend-Bruges airport Eric Dumas added: “We look forward to a smooth reopening at the end of March, with renewed facilities that will only help us forward in the coming years.”
