Republic of Rwanda granted Category 1 status by US DOT

The United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has approved the International Aviation Safety Assessment (IASA) Category 1 rating for the Republic of Rwanda.

The FAA thoroughly reviewed the Republic of Rwanda’s progress in improving its safety oversight process and concluded that it met the requirements for Category 1 status. With this status, the Republic of Rwanda can now serve the United States and enter into codeshare agreements with American carriers.

Category 1 is reserved for countries whose commercial aviation standards align with ICAO safety standards. There are various standards for different aspects that a country must meet to achieve the higher-tiered status, including operating regulations, training, and technical capabilities.

The FAA notes that a country's commercial aviation standards determine the qualification for Category 1 status and nothing relating to one airline.
