Qatar Airways is reportedly in talks to acquire as much as a 20% stake in Virgin Australia, according to the Australian Financial Review.
The move could be announced as early as next month, the report said, citing sources familiar with the matter.
Virgin Australia was bought by private equity group Bain Capital in 2020 for AU$3.5bn ($2.45 billion), following the adverse effects the airline suffered due to the COVID pandemic. The airline has since gone through a restructuring process that saw it lay off a significant number of staff, as well as reducing the size of its fleet.
As of June 2024, Virgin Australia operates a fleet of 87 Boeing 737 aircraft.
Any deal completed for the purchase of Virgin Australia would need approval from Australia’s Foreign Investment Review Board and the Australian Government.
