Qantas chief executive officer has Alan Joyce said confirmed that 2800 full-time jobs would cut under the airline’s restructuring plans.
The arbitrator FWA has rejected the TWU union demand for a 20% cap on contract staff, saying that such a claim would have a "negative impact on efficiency and productivity" and "lead to immediate and significant increases" in the airline's costs.
It also rejected the job security push and the TWU request for an annual 5% pay claim – the tribunal awarded a 3% annual rise, backdated to last July.
Qantas Group responded positively to the decision saying that "Qantas is free to run our business as we see fit and not be dictated to by union officials who do not have the airlines best interests at heart," said a spokesperson.
