Qantas posts near AUD$2billion full-year loss

Qantas has posted a full-year net loss of AUD$1.9 billion for the financial year ended June 30, with the main driver of this loss impairment charges and restructuring costs intended to shore up the company during COVID 19.

Qantas took about AUD$2.8 billion of one-off charges, which included a write-down of AU$1.4 billion on its Airbus SE A380 fleet. The carrier still managed an AUD$124 million underlying pre-tax profit in the 12 months ended June 30.

The company’s chief executive Alan Joyce called for a national framework to be established for domestic flights, arguing that there was no need to add to the travel ban in Victoria with a bar on flights between  Western Australia and South Australia.

Qantas is operating at 20% of its normal domestic schedule for August, though Joyce said if all state borders reopened this could go up to 75%.
