A Qantas A380 has landed safely in Singapore after one of its Rolls Royce Trent 900 engines exploded and aircraft/engine debris was showered on the Indonesian island of Batam where people reported hearing a load bang as the aircraft passed overhead.
Witnesses said the Qantas A380 was trailing smoke from an engine when it made an emergency landing at Singapore’s Changi Airport today. All 433 passengers and 26 crew aboard flight QF32 were safe, Qantas and the Australian government said.
Qantas then announced a moment ago that it had suspended all of its A380 aircraft services following the incident.
“We have decided that we will suspend all A380 takeoffs until we are fully comfortable that sufficient information has been obtained about QF32,” Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce said in Sydney. “We will suspend those A380 services until we are completely confident that Qantas safety requirements have been met.”
Other carries have not suspended flights yet. The A380 involved is the first that was delivered to Qantas and is two years old. This is a breaking story and any comment on the same would be wrong before the facts are known.
