Pratt & Whitney Canada has been given $300 million in government funds towards a $1 billion research project to develop a next generation of high-performance aircraft engines.
Ministers hope the investment will create and maintain more than 700 high-skilled jobs in the GTA and more than 2,000 during a 15-year benefits phase. The firm is now hiring 200 engineers.
The research will take place in Longueuil, Que. and Mississauga, and will lead to lighter aircraft engines with more power, better fuel consumption and improved durability.
John Saabas, president of P&W Canada has stated that the green engines will produce fewer emissions and make less noise; they will cost less to own and take less time to make. “This repayable investment will allow us to continue our efforts to make all our aircraft engines quieter and more fuel efficient,” he said.
