Preparing for the Pegasus Principles
Airline Economics was delighted to host this webinar from the RMI and its working group to discuss its work on developing a Climate-Aligned Framework for aviation lenders called The Pegasus Principles. This webinar should have been part of the Airline Economics Growth Frontiers conference in Dublin in January as a live panel discussion, but it was unfortunately postponed due to an unforeseen power cut at the venue. Airline Economics editor Victoria Tozer-Pennington was joined by representatives from the RMI and representatives from the Aviation Climate Aligned Finance Working Group of banks.

Kaitlin Crouch-Hess introduces the work the team has been doing over many months now. Kaitlin is a director of the Center for Climate-Aligned Finance where she oversees the strategic direction of the Center’s firm- and systems-level programs. With ten years of experience in the banking industry, Kaitlin brings a practitioner’s view to climate portfolio alignment given her previous role as climate lead at ING where she oversaw the bank’s Climate strategy development and execution. The RMI’s Nicky Halterman provides an overview of the process taken by the group. Nicky is a Senior Associate with RMI’s Center for Climate-Aligned Finance. As part of the Center’s sectoral decarbonization team, he works to advance decarbonization in the aviation sector through the development of climate-alignment frameworks. Prior to joining RMI, Nicky worked as a Predoctoral Research Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research (SIEPR), where his research focused on US economic history. He graduated from the University of Oxford in 2018 and has a wide range of policy experience, including prior projects on government procurement, financial regulation, and migration. Taking a closer look at the methodology employed by the working group, Yann Sonnallier explains the methods required for developing the standard. Yann is the global Head of Aviation Finance at Société Générale, a position he has held since 2018. Two very experienced aviation bankers: Joe Shanahan, group head of aviation at Citibank, and Jose Abramovici, global head of the asset finance group at Credit Agricole-CIB, share the methodology the group has employed. Bertrand Dehouck, head of transportation finance at BNP Paribas, focuses on data requirements for client reporting, while Jonathan Howard, managing director of aviation at Standard Chartered Bank, explains the third-party data requirements under the framework. Thank all our presenters and panellists for their insightful comments. The Pegasus Principles will be launching in the second quarter of this year, stay tuned for a launch date in the coming weeks. If you are interested in joining the initiative as a signatory bank, endorsing as an airline/lessor, or if you would like to learn more, please contact Tom White (tomwhite@rmi.org) with any questions.
