Hundreds of flights were cancelled on April 28, 2025, as a result of the mass power outage that hit Portugal and Spain that day. The Iberian Peninsula has fully restored restore power as of April 29, 2025, but some disruptions continue including delays to flights.
According to data from Cirium, 185 flights departing Portuguese airports were cancelled and 187 arrivals were cancelled. The cities of Lisbon and Porto were the worst affected in the country. Nearly 45% of departures from Lisbon were cancelled and around 16% of departures from Porto were cancelled.
A total of 205 flights departing from Spanish airports were cancelled and 208 arrivals were cancelled too. Seville and Almeria were most impacted by the power outage with around 33% of departures cancelled from Seville and approximately 18% of departures were cancelled from Almeria.
There were 3,005 departures and 3,005 arrivals scheduled to and from Spanish airports that day, as well as 709 departures and 722 arrivals scheduled to and from Portuguese airports.
Spain's electricity grid operator Red Electrica (REE) ruled out a cyberattack as a possible cause, instead pointing to solar generation as a preliminary cause. There were reportedly two disconnection events in succession. REE said that the systems had managed to recover from the first disconnection event, but had failed to recover from the second, leading to the mass power outage.
