Post-Thanksgiving global air cargo rebounds more quickly than last year

Global air cargo tonnages have recovered more quickly than 2022 following the annual American Thanksgiving holiday, weekly analysis from World ACD Market Data suggests, with rates ex-Asia Pacific continuing to show a strong rise.

Preliminary figures for week 48 indicate a 2% increase in tonnages and a 1% increase in average global rates compared to the previous week, with demand already recovered from the seasonal post-Thanksgiving dip. On a global basis, volumes in the last two weeks remain 3% higher year-on-year, mostly driven by a 14% increase with cargo originating in the Asia-Pacific region. Overall available capacity has also increased 15% compared with last year.

Worldwide average rates are currently -19% below their levels this time last year, at an average of US$2.60 per kilo in week 48, although they remain significantly above pre-pandemic levels (up 43% compared to November 2019).
