Porter Airlines has stated it will pay cash compensation of up to $1,300 for passengers who are “bumped” from domestic flights due to overbooking.
The actual amounts paid will vary, depending on the fare paid and the length of the delay.
The announcement is as a result of a ruling from the Canadian Transportation Agency ordering the airline to amend its regulations by July 8th.
The delays only apply to “denied boarding” due to overbooking, not delays related to bad weather or mechanical problems.
The regulator’s order is a result of a complaint filed by Gabor Lukacs, an air passenger rights activist, who has filed complaints against other airlines including Air Canada and WestJet Airlines.
The regulator also ordered Porter to amend its rules on bumping to include the possibility of passengers being booked on other carriers, and not limiting refunds to unused portions of tickets.
