Perth Airport is all set to invest $53 million to support the growth of aviation sector. Part one of the plan is to build a new $23 million maintenance hangar and apron facilities for Virgin Australia Regional Airlines (VARA), the group's regional and charter airline operator. Perth Airport is eyeing a strong passenger recovery and is expecting the passenger footfalls to climb up with the approaching holiday season.
In February 2023, Perth Airport handled 1.07 million passengers, 31% above pre-COVID levels, and 30% travelled on regional and FIFO flights.
Kate Holsgrove, Acting CEO, Perth Airport said: “Growth in FIFO and regional passenger traffic movements over the past three years made it timely to invest in new capacity and facilities. This project is a key enabler for the future growth of T2 and the wider centralisation process. We are delighted to partner with VARA to support their growth in Western Australia. We are pleased VARA will support this new maintenance hangar and apron facility once it is built in September 2024.”
VARA has a fleet of Fokker F100s for regional and FIFO services with an average age of approximately 30 years. With the ageing fleet VARA is planning to phase out its Fokker fleet for a more fuel-efficient B737-700s.
Nathan Miller, General Manager, VARA said: “The project at Perth airport demonstrated the airline's commitment to Western Australia and the VARA operation. Our fleet renewal program is well underway and will strengthen our resources and contract flying in Western Australia. The program means larger more fuel efficient 737-700 aircraft will join the fleet as we phase out our F100s. This upgrade of our facility is another important step forward for VARA and will enable a more efficient and flexible operation from our Perth Airport base.
