Pakistan CAA and Emirates in dispute over aircraft grounding

The chairman of Emirates and the head of the Pakistani CAA have held talks over the recent alleged forcible grounding of one of the UAE carrier’s B777s.

The Emirates flight from Dubai-Islamabad was diverted to Lahore for “undisclosed security reasons”, and held on the ground for more than 24 hours, triggering a demand from Emirates for a compensation payment of “millions of rupees”.

The compensation was demanded according to what Emirates stated was the Pakistani authority’s own regulations concerning delayed flights.

Reports indicate the diversion was due to fears for the safety of the senior Pakistani politician that was on board the flight, associated with political protests taking place at the aircraft’s destination.

The talks apparently resulted in Emirates dropping the compensation demand.
