Cirium’s flights tracked data shows a massive 67% drop in flights across the North Atlantic when comparing 2021 to the same period in 2019 (passenger flights flown for 1st Jan – 1st Sep 2019 vs 2021 – North America to Europe).
Cirium data analysis reveals that 130,727 passenger flights in total were flown by airlines from North America to Europe between Jan 1 and Sep 1 2019. This equates to 36.4 million seats.
For the same time frame in 2021, there have been a total of 42,677 flights flown from NA to Europe. This equates to around 12 million seats. This means there was a 67% drop in flights in 2021 vs the same period 2019.
Of the top 20 transatlantic carriers (of 2021), Aer Lingus saw the biggest drop YoY (versus 2019) with a 79% drop in seats. BA closely followed with a drop of 78%.
Between Jan 1 and Sep 1 2019, the carriers with the most market share (based on seats flown) from NA to Europe were:
Delta Air Lines (11%) – over 4 million seats
United Airlines (10%) – over 3.6 million seats
British Airways (10%) – over 3.6 million seats
American Airlines (9%) – around 3.3 million seats
Lufthansa (7%) – over 2.7 million seats
Between Jan 1 and Sep 1 2021, the carriers with the most market share (based on seats flown) from NA to Europe were:
Unites Airlines (12%) – around 1.5 million seats
Delta Air Lines (11%) – around 1.3 million seats
American Airlines (10%) – over 1.2 million seats
Lufthansa (7%) – over 800,000 seats
British Airways (7%) – over 800,000 seats
Alitalia, Air Canada Rouge, Air Transat plus Norweigan and Norweigan Air UK fell from the top 20 in 2021. However, Aeroflot, Austrian Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, TAP Portugal and TUI UK entered the table of top 20 transatlantic carriers.
