The Federal Government of Nigeria successfully operated the last repatriation flight from Sudan on May 13. The flight brought back that last group of Nigerians fleeing the unrest in Sudan.
The final flight, operated by Tarco Aviation, arrived at Abuja Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport with 147 returnees, while an earlier flight had landed with 125 passengers.
In the two-week rescue mission,15 flights were operated by the government and private airlines to fly 2,518 Nigerians home. Precisely 1,100 citizens were airlifted from Aswan, while 1,418 were airlifted from Port Sudan to Abuja Nnamdi Azikiwe.
On May 3, Air Peace flew 277 Nigerians from Aswan to Abuja. On May 7, Max Air evacuated 410 students who had been stranded in Egypt after fleeing Sudan. Azman Air flew 327 Nigerians from Aswan.
Sudanese Tarco Aviation and the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) operated the rest of the flights.
Although the emergency evacuation mission has been completed, a mop-up exercise will be run for other Nigerians who wish to return home in the next few days.
