National strikes continue to cripple Nigeria but at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos yesterday, only Lufthansa and KLM stayed away and cancelled flights. United Airlines, which did not operate into the country on Monday and Tuesday, arrived with two aircraft to airlift the backlog of its passengers out. Delta Air Lines was also in action yesterday after announcing that it would be changing its crew in Accra, Ghana as airline crews in Nigeria are barred by the unions from gaining access to the airport under threat of violence. Kenya Airways, Qatar Airways and other airlines arrived on Wednesday and airlifted their passengers to various destinations. The Nigerian Trade Union Congress has shown itself to be most effective this week but it has also dented Nigeria’s profile at a time when it was gaining respect and trade through aviation. Let us hope this is a blip.
