Heathrow will work with intralogistics systems manufacturer Beumer Group to create a new baggage system for Heathrow Terminal 2. The system will allow for handling of 31,000 bags a day with improved resilience, once complete. The technology will also provide greater data analytics to ensure a more predictable and reliable service.
“Installing a new dedicated baggage system in Terminal 2 is the next stage in our plans to breathe new life into the beating heart of Heathrow,” said Heathrow chief solutions officer Helen Elsby.
“We've put all our technological visions into the design of the new state-of-the-art baggage handling system, which will be based on our CrisBag technology combined with our data analytics solution,” said Beumer Group airport director Ronald Willems.
The upgrade will allow Heathrow to switch off the 30 year old Terminal 1 baggage system that currently supports Terminal 2. This will also green light the next phase of Terminal 1’s demolition process, which closed in 2015. The demolition will make way for Terminal 2 to be extended to its full size and other redevelopment opportunities.
“Just like home renovations, we’re improving Heathrow room by room as we continue to build the airport of tomorrow, without interrupting the passengers of today,” added Elsby.
The baggage system upgrade appointed to Beumer will be a six-year project.
