Tokyo's Narita Airport has begun construction of its third runway, runway C, as well as the extension of runway B by 1,000 metres, according to local media.
The 670.7bn yen ($4.6bn) project is expected to bring the new and extended runways into operation by March 2029. This will bring the airport's annual landing and takeoff capacity from 300,000 flights to 500,000 upon completion.
The Mainichi reported that the project has been dubbed the “second opening” of the airport, which opened in 1978.
The airport will nearly double in size with the project bringing it from 1,198 hectares to 2,297 hectares.
