An eight-hour strike by employees of the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) effectively shut down Nigerian airspace until the strike was called off by 3.30p.m on Monday.
The unions were striking over the non-implementation of the newly approved salary scale endorsed by the National Salary and Wages Commission (NSWC). The strike was called off following a meeting of the union leaders and the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Emeka Nwogu, in Abuja.
A statement issued by the Minister of Aviation and signed by her Senior Special Adviser (Media), Joe Obi, said: “Two industrial unions in the aviation sector-National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) and the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN) which threatened to embark on strike today (yesterday) over disputes with the management of NAMA on issues bordering on staff welfare have shelved their strike.”
The statement explained that the decision to shelve the strike followed some “resolutions taken at the end of a meeting in Abuja convened at the instance of the Minister of Labour with the leadership of the two unions and the management of NAMA.”
