The Mumbai International Airport recorded passenger traffic of 4.5 million in January 2023, an increase of 149% as compared to the same time last year. The airport served 1.2 million international passengers, and around 3.2 million domestic passengers.

“This rise in travellers is driven by positive sentiments among air travellers and a strong surge due to the festive holiday season,” the airport said in a release. The second-busiest airport in India has been adding plenty of new flights out of Mumbai, contributing to the overall passenger increase.

Last year, VietJet started flying between Mumbai and Da Nang in Vietnam; flynas started flights connecting Mumbai with Riyadh and Dammam. In November 2022, Vistara started the Mumbai-Dhaka service.

Air Canada launched Toronto and Mumbai route via Heathrow as part of its plan to grow its presence in India, while Vistara started connecting it with Muscat in December 2022. Meanwhile, Vistara also recently announced a service between Mumbai and Mauritius using its Airbus A321LR aircraft, beginning March 26.

Air India has also started operating more flights from Mumbai. The airline will launch its long-haul flight to San Francisco and have also started the Mumbai-JFK route this month.

Dubai, London, and Abu Dhabi held the spot as the top three international destinations from Mumbai. Whereas Delhi, Bengaluru, and Goa continue to retain their position as the top three domestic destinations. CSMIA currently acts as a gateway to 65 domestic and 47 international destinations for passengers from Mumbai and its surrounding areas.
