Miami-Dade county's aviation department (MDAD) has taken its first four Nissan Leaf electric cars for staff who travel to and from Miami International Airport.

MDAD said 13 more of the cars are scheduled to arrive in 2024, with more than 20 to follow in the five subsequent years. The county has also announced plans to replace the airport's petrol-fuelled shuttle buses with electric versions.

"Every day is Earth Day in Miami-Dade County because our environment is our economy and the key to our survival," said county mayor Daniella Levine Cava, speaking ahead of Earth Day, held on April 22.

"We work year-round to protect our planet and our residents by building resilient infrastructure and looking for innovative solutions that help us mitigate the impacts of climate change and ensure that all our residents live safely to thrive," she added.
