The Federal Aviation Administration has restored Mexico's civil aviation authority’s top aviation safety rating of Category 1 due to significant improvements being made. A review made by the US FAA found that Mexico now complies with international standards, following its downgrading to Category 2 in July.
Category 1 means the civil aviation authority complies with International Civil Aviation Organization standards, while Category 2 means it either lacks laws or regulations necessary to oversee air carriers in accordance with minimum international standards, or that its aviation agency lacks technical expertise, trained personnel, record keeping, or inspection procedures.
The downgrading in July didn’t stop flights between Mexico and the US but it did prevent any Mexican airlines expanding service its larger neighbour.
