Mexicana owner requests US asylum

Reports have emerged that the former owner of bankrupt airline Mexicana, Gastón Azcárraga, who is also the former chairman of hotel chain Grupo Posadas, has requested political asylum in the US. Azcárraga is wanted in Mexico in connection with the collapse of Mexicana. He led the group of investors who purchased the airline from the Mexican government in 2006. An arrest warrant was issued in February by a Mexican judge charging him with fraud charges related to operations at Mexicana. Azcárraga could be extradited to Mexico if approved by a US judge.
