Malaysia Aviation Group unveiled an order for up to 60 737 MAX aircraft on March 21, 2025.
The group made a firm order for 18 737-8 and 12 737-10 jets — totalling 30 737 MAX aircraft — powered by CFM LEAP-1B engines, along with options for 30 more to renew Malaysia Airline's single aisle fleet. In addition, the introduction of the 737-10 will also be the airline's first narrowbody to feature its lie-flat business class seats.
The order was booked in January 2025, noted as an unidentified customer.
“This is a significant investment for Malaysia Aviation Group, enabling us to deliver cutting-edge premium cabin offerings and state-of-the-art technology to our customers,” said Boeing Global president Brendan Nelson. “The opportunity to introduce more Boeing airplanes in Malaysia is a point of pride for our many Malaysian employees who contribute to every airplane Boeing builds and delivers to customers around the world.”
The airline will gradually phase out its older generation 737-800 aircraft, aiming for a modernised narrowbody fleet of 55 737-8 and 737-10 aircraft by 2030.
“The selection of the 737-8 and 737-10 reflects a careful evaluation of our long-term growth strategy, ensuring we have the right aircraft to meet evolving market demands,” said MAG group managing director Izham Ismail. “These next-generation aircraft offer greater fuel efficiency, extended range, and enhanced passenger comfort. By balancing operational needs with an elevated travel experience, we are strengthening our commitment to delivering a seamless and enjoyable journey for our passengers.”
MAG has an existing order for 25 737-8 aircraft through a long-term lease with Air Lease Corporation, with 11 already delivered and the remaining scheduled by 2027.
The group currently operates a fleet of 113 aircraft, including 42 737-800s under Malaysia Airlines and five under Firefly.
