Malaysia Airlines scales back operations following supply chain, technical issues
Malaysia Airlines has scaled back its operations as ongoing supply chain and technical issues continue to impact the company. The decision came after a string of recent flight cancellations and delays from the airline as well as Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) subsidiaries Firefly and Amal. It also follows after the airline made two emergency landings last week. The airline said it is ""working closely"" with aircraft and engine OEMs to address both supply chain and technical issues. Its network will be reduced through to December this year. ""We are taking immediate steps to address the root causes of these significant issues that contribute to operational difficulties including supply chain constraints, manpower challenges, and other external factors as part of the continuing normalisation of global aviation operations post-pandemic,"" said the group managing director Izham Ismail. ""MAG has also been affected by the delayed deliveries of new aircraft this year, leading to less aircraft being made available for operations than planned."" Ismail said on August 16, 2024, that the delay of its 737-8 aircraft scheduled for delivery this year had affected its operations. It had received its first 737-8 aircraft at the end of last year. In November 2023, it said it is looking to receive 25 of the aircraft type up to 2026. The scaling back of its network is effective immediately. Reuters reported that the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia has cut the duration of Malaysia Airlines' air operator certificate (AOC) from three years down to one year, following an investigation into the carrier's technical issues.
