The recent volcanic eruption at Mount Ruang, Indonesia, has caused Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia to suspend flights in the region; with delays ongoing despite the latter having reinstated some services.
Malaysia Airlines cancelled several flights to and from Kuala Lumpur International Airport to the states of Sabah and Sarawak, with a total of 37 flights listed online as being cancelled as a result of the eruption. Stressing safety as a priority, the airline added: “Rest assured, we’re actively working to arrange alternative flights for affected travellers as soon as conditions permit”.
Although AirAsia has now resumed a number of services, it stressed that “most flights continue to be impacted”: with flights to and from nine airports (including Kota Kinabalu, Tawau, Sandakan, Labuan, Miri, Sibu, Bintulu, Kuching and Brunei) among those affected.
