MAG confirms filing of injunction against AirAsia for unauthorized sale of its tickets on SuperApp

Malaysian Aviation Group (MAG) has filed an injunction in an attempt to stop AirAsia from selling its seats via its Super App. The case will be heard in August following the filing of the injunction late last year.

A hearing is set for August 2023, when the Malaysian Aviation Group could not come to a mutual agreement with AirAsia.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke revealed the status of the injunction to the media after discrepancies in airline ticket classification and prices for flights from Kuala Lumpur to Tawau became an issue recently.

Loke said the two companies were involved in a dispute due to tickets being sold at high prices with a lack of regulation.

''MAG and AirAsia had failed to come to terms regarding ticket sales on the app, but AirAsia continued to sell tickets, acquiring seat inventory aggregators and consolidators, including kiwi.com, which is not a Malaysia Airlines partner,” said Izham Ismail, Group Managing Director of Malaysia Aviation Group.

“The lack of regulation in Malaysia regarding the use of online travel agents (OTA's) and fare aggregators has been problematic, with inflated prices and incorrect passenger details passed onto operating airlines. With continued incorrect information, the airlines have struggled to pass on vital information to passengers about delays, cancellations, or schedule changes,” Ismail added.

He said this causes confusion and frustration among customers, which is why a commercial agreement is important to set boundaries in pricing and enables the sharing of information in a seamless way.
