Lufthansa suspends Tehran flights, agrees pay deal for cabin crew
Germain airline Lufthansa has extended the suspension of its flights to Iran's capital Tehran as the situation in the Middle East continues to remain unstable, with Iran suspected to retaliate after a suspected Israeli air strike on Iran's embassy located in Syria, Reuters reported. The suspension is reportedly to be until around April 13. It remains to be seen if other airlines will follow suit. Additionally, the airline and trade union UFO have reached an agreement over a long-term collective pay deal for its approximately 19,000 cabin crew. Wages will gradually increase to 16.5% (with interest effect 17.4%) with the collective labour agreement being valid until at least the end of 2026 and comes with a corresponding peace obligation. Its cabin crew pay will increase by 8% from May 2024; a further 5% from March 2025 and a further 3.5% a year later. ""I am very pleased about the agreement with our collective bargaining partner UFO – for our colleagues in the cabin, who do an outstanding job every day, and also for our guests, who finally have planning security again in this regard when flying with Lufthansa,"" said Deutsche Lufthansa chief human resources officer and labour director Michael Niggemann. He added: ""The agreed salary developments in all professional groups are also an economic challenge that we now have to deal with."" The new collective agreement includes full inflation compensation premium of €3,000 ($3,200) net, with part-time at a pro rata basis, and will be implemented as soon as possible. Additionally, it will see increases in purser allowances, holiday pay supplement, and foreign language allowance.
