Lufthansa rolls out second "green" aircraft tractor in Frankfurt

Lufthansa is again trumpeting its environmental credentials by publicising its deployment of a second aircraft tractor "powered by green electricity".

The tractor, which is "in operation at Frankfurt Airport for more than ten hours a day", according to Lufthansa, can tow aircraft with a take-off weight of 350 tons at speeds of up to 25 km/h.

The driving is being done by LEOS, Lufthansa's ground handlers. The tractor is a Phoenix E all-electric made by German manufacturer Goldhofer and runs off lithium batteries.

Lufthansa Group and its carriers recently announced the launch of more expensive carbon offset or green fares.

"If you choose to buy a green fare, your flight will be more sustainable," Lufthansa says on its website.

Lufthansa was in February and March 2023 criticised by the UK's advertising regulator over allegedly misleading claims about the environment on its billboards.
