Lufthansa Group joins Airbus’ carbon removal initiative

The Lufthansa Group is to collaborate with Airbus on the pre-purchase of carbon removal credits for 40,000 tonnes of CO2, to be filtered from the air over four years using the Direct Air Carbon Capture and Storage method.

The carbon removal credits will be issued by Airbus through its Airbus Carbon Capture Offer (ACCO) service. Available from 2026, these certificates will allow an annual purchase of carbon removal credits for 10,000 tonnes of CO2 a year over a period of four years.

“The Lufthansa Group was one of the very first aviation companies to work with Airbus to explore the potential of direct air carbon capture and storage solutions,” said Nicolas Chrétien, head of environment and sustainability at Airbus. The signing of the contract follows a joint declaration of intent dating from 2022.

In November 2023, easyJet became the first firm customer to sign up for the carbon removal scheme, based on Airbus’ partnership with 1PointFive.
