Lufthansa Cargo will start marketing cargo capacities on Italian flag carrier ITA Airways' routes from June this year. The company is adding Rome to its cargo network, marking its fifth hub.

For flights starting June 16, 2025, Lufthansa Cargo will start marketing the cargo capacity under its own AWB prefix from Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Buenos Aires to Rome. On all other routes, both airlines will initially continue to operate under two separate AWB numbers. Following regulatory approvals, Lufthansa Cargo will gradually take over the marketing of ITA's belly capacities on all continental and intercontinental routes under its own AWB prefix.

Following the full integration of ITA Airways' cargo capacities, Lufthansa Cargo's available capacity will increase nearly 20%.

“In addition to Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna, and Brussels, Rome will be our fifth hub that will help us offer flexible and quality solutions to our customers,” said Lufthansa Cargo CEO Ashwin Bhat.

ITA Airways general manager and CEO Joerg Eberhart commented: “Thanks to the extensive Lufthansa Group fleet, combined with ITA Airways capacity, our customers will benefit from an enhanced service and a broader network, leveraging the destinations offered by the group and exploiting the high potential of Fiumicino, our hub.”

The Italian airline's integration into the Lufthansa Group was finalised earlier this year after the latter had acquired a 41% stake in the airline, with it aiming to eventually increase its stake further.
