Lufthansa cancels another 1,200 flights as crew stage third strike

Lufthansa cabin crew have begun another 24-hour nationwide strike, forcing Lufthansa to cancel 1,200 flights today and over this weekend. This amounts to around two-thirds of scheduled flights from late Thursday into the weekend. As mentioned already the unions are seeking a 5% pay increase for cabin crew and assurances on safeguarding jobs. Both matters are something that Lufthansa cannot agree to at this time and everyone will be watching to make sure that management hold their ground, weakness from airline management in this fight will kick the €1.5bn cost-cutting programme into the long grass and ultimately lead to more job losses than are currently planned.
Lufthansa posted a 24% fall in second-quarter profits. In May, the airline announced it would cut 3,500 office staff – that group of employees has not yet resorted to militant action to their credit.
