Lufthansa is facing a day of strikes by its cabin crew in protest over pay and working hours. The strike, which lasts for eight hours at Frankfurt airport and 11 hours at Munich, has caused the airline to cancel around 300 flights today mainly on short and medium-haul routes from Frankfurt and Munich airports. Some international flights were also cancelled however, to destinations in the US, China and Mexico.
The flight attendants' UFO union is seeking a 5% pay raise for the airline's 18,000 cabin crew workers after working under a pay freeze for several days. Lufthansa has said that it is offering a 3.5% raise, and is calling for a slight increase in working hours.
The union objects to what it says would be only gradual increases and lower wages for new employees.
