London City ditches laptop and liquid security requirement

London City Airport announced on April 4 that it was the first "major airport in the UK" to allow passengers get through security without removing laptops and liquids from their carry-on bags.

After trials last year, the small London airport followed Teesside Airport in installing CT scanners that mean the items do not have to be pulled out for separate screening.

"Passengers flying from the central London airport for the Easter getaway will be the first in London to benefit from the new guidelines", the airport said in its announcement.

“The new CT scanners will take our passenger experience to another level, reducing the stress and hassle of 100mL liquids in clear, plastic bags and having to unload your hand luggage" said Alison FitzGerald, the airport's chief operating officer.

The scanners, made by Leidos, were installed ahead of a UK government demand that airports across the country upgrade security facilities to eliminate the need for liquids and electronics to be hauled out of cases.

“We’re making sure that all major airports across the UK introduce a new generation of sophisticated security technology, and it’s great to see this being harnessed at London City Airport already," said Baroness Vere, the UK's aviation minister.
