LATAM announces first SAF-powered international flight

LATAM has made its first international flight using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) with a LATAM Cargo Chile aircraft crossing the Atlantic Ocean from Zaragoza in Spain.

The flight was fuelled by SAF that has been internationally certified through the ISCC EU (International Sustainability Carbon Certification) procedure. The SAF was provided by aviation fuel supplier Air bp and came from the first batch of co-processed SAF ISCC EU at the Castellón refinery in Spain.

“This flight represents one of the most concrete advances in the group's agenda regarding the use of SAF. At LATAM we are committed to contributing to the protection and care of the environment and the use of this type of fuel is a key tool in this effort," said Andrés Bianchi, chief executive of LATAM Cargo.

“Representing a key step in the replacement of fossil fuels with renewable feed-stocks in existing refineries plays a critical role in increasing SAF production in a more economical and efficient way,” says Andreea Moyes, global head of sustainability at Airbp.
