JetBlue to continue operating at Amsterdam airport for summer 2024
The European Commission has confirmed that JetBlue can continue operating at Amsterdam airport over the IATA summer 2024 season, with no adverse competition on the Amsterdam to New York route identified. Having ‘actively and closely monitored the evolution of market conditions’, the Commission determined there was no risk of ‘serious and irreparable damage to competition for transatlantic traffic’. Having studied three joint ventures related to transatlantic passenger services between 2010 and 2015 (namely Oneworld Joint Business, Star A++ and Skyteam), the Commission concluded that ‘on certain hub-to-hub transatlantic routes such as Amsterdam-New York, the entry of a new competitor or the expansion of an existing competitor was necessary to remedy the distortive effects of the joint ventures’. Due to tight capacity constraints at Amsterdam airport, JetBlue had not been able to obtain all its requested slots for the upcoming summer season, and faced the risk of discontinuing its operations to New York and Boston as of March 30 2024. However, during the later phase of the slot allocation procedure, the airline has now obtained all the slots it needs to continue operating at Amsterdam airport. The Commission notes it will continue its monitoring ahead of the IATA summer 2025 season.
