JetBlue seeks industry and government backing as it announces "most aggressive" emissions cuts plan

JetBlue said it will cut jet fuel emissions by 50% per revenue tonne kilometre by 2035 but warned it could "only be successful with industry and policy support".

What it labelled its "most aggressive near-term emissions target" was aimed at getting to net zero, or cutting carbon emissions entirely, by 2040 - a decade ahead of expectations.

But the carrier said it would "regularly review and update this target" if there was "any significant change" to its business or structure.

“Effectively cutting our per-seat emissions in half will require substantial change to the way we run our business today,” said Robin Hayes, JetBlue chief executive. “Our team is fully committed to hitting the goal, but we can’t do it alone. We are calling on governments, aircraft and engine manufacturers, and fuel producers to support the development of the products and solutions that airlines need to achieve our ambitious goals" Hayes added.

The carrier said on December 2 that it would procure 92 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel as part of a deal with supplier Fidelis New Energy.
