JetBlue and Shell Aviation have announced they aim to increase the supply of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
JetBlue said it is "expected to take delivery of 10 million gallons of blended SAF at LAX over the next two years" and said it has an option to purchase up to half as much again the following year, with the additions taking the carrier's SAF intake to to around 15% of its fuel use at LAX.
“We’ve long said we need multiple key stakeholders to step up to reach our aggressive emissions reduction goals. This deal with Shell is a key signal of the growing engagement of the major fuel producers to begin converting conventional jet fuel to SAF,” said Robin Hayes, chief executive of JetBlue.
“It’s terrific to be supporting JetBlue once again in its decarbonisation efforts. Like Shell, JetBlue understands that SAF will be the key technology to help decarbonise flight,” said Jan Toschka, president of Shell Aviation, which has said it aims to make SAF 10% of its aviation fuel output by the end of the decade.
