Japan Airlines and Alaska Airlines seek to expand codeshare, awaiting DOT approval

Japan Airlines (JAL) and Alaska Airlines are seeking to expand the existing codeshare and have applied to the US Transportation Department (DOT) to deepen the pact.

As per the application, Alaska Airline has sought approval to place its AS code on JAL’s routes between Japan and the US. If approved, the codeshare will cover JAL-operated flights between Tokyo’s Haneda and Narita airports and four points on the US west coast, namely Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco and Seattle.

As per the current codeshare, Alaska Airlines displays JAL’s JL code on flights between domestic points in the US, as well as to international destinations in Canada and Mexico.

Both the airlines signed an initial codeshare and frequent flyer deal in 2016. The agreement was expanded in February 2018 to add cover some new routes like San Francisco to Boston, Denver and Newark.

The airlines hope to have secured approval to begin operating these additional codeshare routes by mid-May. According to JAL the approval will benefit consumers by providing additional travel options for passengers between the US and Japan.
