Is IndiGo eyeing a record order of 500 Airbus A320 planes?

IndiGo is poised to confirm a record order to acquire up to 500 Airbus A320 aircraft, Reuter reports. Currently IndiGo has a market share of 57% in the Indian domestic market space. Should IndiGo proceed with the order, it would be the largest on record by the number of aircraft.

IndiGo is one of Airbus' largest customers, the airline already has ordered 830 over the years, of which approximately 500 are still yet to be delivered.

In addition to the airline's current talks for 500 A320, Boeing and Airbus are in separate discussions to sell up to 25 787 Dreamliners or A330s to the airline for its long-haul and widebody fleet aiming at international expansion.

The airline is reportedly looking at potential aircraft to improvise its current fleet with Airbus closing in on the deal. The anticipated deal is expected to be over $50 billion.

Currently India holds the second largest order book behind United States. Air India's Airbus order will add 210 A320neo family narrowbodies for its short and medium-haul operations and 40 A350s.

IndiGo and the Tata brands hold 80% of the Indian domestic aviation market.
