Irish Government considers extended wage support for aviation industry

It has been reported that the Irish Government is considering an extended wage support scheme specifically for the aviation industry over concerns of further job losses.

Assistant Secretary Fintan Towey told a conference delegation that the Government recognised the
need to provide clarity on any lifting of travel restrictions before the end of May and that an announcement on this issue would be coming in the next one or two weeks.

Towey stated that recovery in the aviation sector would lag behind the rest of the economy and that this would necessitate "some adjustment in employment levels".

Total government financial support for the aviation sector already totals €200m, with a further €80m sector-specific package announced in December, confirmed Towey, who added that the Government was open to "further sector specific supports".

An aviation sub-group of the Labour Employer Economic Forum is said to be examining a proposal for a special extended Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme for the sector.
